Something I quickly threw together yesterday: http://jkle.fragism.com

Hey, man. That's not too bad, but instead of using tables for positioning, try <div> placed with "postion: absolute" and where ever on the page you'd like to the pixel. CSS is is tremendously flexible, if you'd like some more info check this site out: http://www.ericmeyeroncss.com .

So a guy walked up to me and said, "I'm a teepee, I'm a whigwam! I'm a teepee, I'm a whigwam!" And I said, "Relax man, you're too tense."

yeah i was planning on using CSS but that requires more than 5 minutes worth of effort haha.

i just quick did this up, if everyone likes it we can start using CSS and make this b**** XHTML compliant and whatnot. (i'd like to use some PHP too but I can't think of something to use it for)

any ideas for cool features/functionality? (login, user profiles, cms?)

I mean, if you really want a message board, that's about all I can think of for practical application. But you could write the site so that the actual page never changes only the content on the page (which would be written in XML). This is where PHP comes in, it pulls and parses the data then arranges it according to its preset layout that is of your design. That's truly OOP, but is a pain in the ass to write. I can send you some links to pages that are examples of this. Let me know.

Yeah, creating your own separate forum has great advantages, but you also have to manage it. I'm all for that idea, it would go well with the premise of the site as most guild/clan/gaming group sites I've ever seen include at least a nominally functional board for their members.

As for SSI's, those are great, but XML is pretty much pure data with nothing to style it so much as you would put in an SSI. Also, an SSI is static and requires multiple pages that then pull whatever the SSI might be, where on a dynamic PHP page there would be only one page pulling everything.

But you could write the site so that the actual page never changes only the content on the page (which would be written in XML).

lol, are you talking about AJAX? there's about a .00001 probability of me using AJAX for anything. you're welcome to have at it though.

if you are talking about ajax, it's the javascript that pulls apart and parses data and arranges it on the page. the data comes from php or some server-side code.

anything in php would be php4 which isn't OO (that's all the current host allows).

if you're just talking about having PHP parse XML stuff on the server-side only wouldn't it just be a lot easier to use server-side include? considering the only ideas we have so far are forums, and we already have nice ones provided by ReT, i personally don't see the need for complicating things with XML. i'd rather use YAML anyway πŸ˜†

i was looking for a bit more of functionality requests, not so much methodologies, technologies or orientations (aspect, object, service, etc). good suggestions though heh (i'm not sure how many people will understand what we're talking about though)

Oh, I forgot to mention before that I agree totally that PHP + XML = pain in ass.

so a member's only forum then? anything else that might be cool?

I don't know. Do you have any newsfeeds that you would like on your site?

well news like upcomming events maybe

Not really what I meant, but a good idea nonetheless. What I meant was to have a script pull a newsfeed about, like video games, computer gaming, and that sort of stuff from other sites that serve as news hubs. I mean, wouldn't you like to see the latest news about the Wii on your clan homepage? πŸ˜›

FYI, the JK.net sites are back:

http://www.jediknight.net/ctf/
http://www.jediknight.net/jkmag/
http://www.jediknight.net/hiss/
http://www.jediknight.net/mmvsg/

So file links should work again. Let me know if you find any broken links/images and I'll do my best to get them corrected ASAP

Enjoy!

See you next weekend...

Impressive folks. Nice looking website. Give me a heads up if you need web hosting or if you want your own forum (like your own personal installation of phpBB2).
