Okay, I just thought I would mention this, since a certain user (who shall remain nameless) recently accused me of "hacking" because he thought these powers could only be used online with mods.
This is not a cheat or hack (cog or otherwise), but an intended feature of the original game. Ignore Single Player, since it is different than Multiplayer.
I CHALLENGE him and anyone else to try this.
No mods of any kind, no hacks no modifications, or addons.
Go into Multiplayer characters. Create a NEW Level 8 (Jedi Lord) character, and assign four force starts to each of the light side powers... that is, Blind, Persuasion, Absorb and Heal... (no neutrals). You'll have lots of stars left over (unused). Click save. Go in game. You'll find that you can use Force Protection! This is the only way to get it without cheating or using a mod.
Ditto for Deadly Sight. Go to your multiplayer character screen. Assign four force stars to each of the Darkside powers (Grip, Lightning, Throw, and Destruction). Save, despite your many leftover stars. Go in game, you'll have Deadly Sight! Again, this is the only way to get it legitimately in MP.
If you ever see somebody use Neutrals (Seeing, Speed, Jump, Pull) AND Deadly Sight or Protect, they are cheating (unless it's some mod you're all using).
Another thing, it IS possible to combine Dark and Lightside powers under certain conditions. As you know, if the sever allows a maximum Force Level (like say 8), you can use Levels below that. Meaning you can use a Level 7 character on a Level 8 server, or 6 on a Level 7 server, etc. You can even use a 0 (no force) character on a Level 8 server! (though you'd be foolish too unless you are a glutton for punishment!)
Here is how to get Dark and Lightside together... Choose Level 6 (Disciple).
You can pick both Light and DarkSide and Neutral in any mix you want. However you'll notice you don't have access to the higher level powers (not only no Deadly Sight or Protect as you'd expect, but also no Destruction or Absorb, iirc). But you could have say, Blind and Throw, Grip, Lightning, Persuasion and/or Heal.
It's actually true that levels below Disciple you can have a mixture of powers too, but your power choices go down. At level 5 you lose Lightning and persuasion, IIRC. As you go down in rank of course you also have other handicaps.. your mana pool is less (and recharges slower, iirc) and while you can still block shots with your lightsaber, the projectiles will go back toward your opponents less often (and more often in random directions).
At level 4 (again if I iirc, though certainly by level 3) you can only use neutrals.
I hope that clears things up. Mysteries of the Sith is an entirely different story because you can mix and match powers, though you are more limited in the variety of powers (since you can only choose 3, 2, or 1 from each category and some are cut off based on lower rank).
So, to sum up:
If you see somebody use Destruction AND Absorb, they are cheating. If you see them use Deadly Sight and any lightside power, or Protection and any darkside power, they are cheating. If you see them combine Protect or Deadly Sight with any neutral power, they are cheating. This is not true in MotS, however. That is, unless the server is running some kind of Force Power mod...
*I* don't cheat online. But if you're going to accuse somebody of cheating, at LEAST know how the basic game works before you point fingers!
π
And just in case anyone assumes these powers are "lame" all you have to do is read the page below and you'll see there are numerous counters and built in handicaps when you use them.
For further reading, go here: http://www.jediknight.net/hiss/
(and yes, that's really Hiss' site from the glory days of JK/MotS, I just edited the main page to let people know he wasn't around to update it anymore)
Also here: http://www.jediknight.net/trail/force.html
You can also consult Gamefaqs for further proof, but the "pudding" as it were is that you can try this on your own copy of JK and you'll see I'm not BSing! π
There Can Be Only One
Oh, I forgot to mention, this guy also wondered why blaster shots were bouncing off of me in our game.
That is because I was using Force Protection (which is a Level 8 Lightside-only power in the game, designated by the sound it plays and the big swirling bubble of green particles!), which has ALWAYS protected you from blaster shots (which bounce off of you, just like a super shield).
If you don't believe me, fire up a game by yourself with Protection (remember, Level 8, four stars in all light side powers, no neutrals) and go to Blades of Death (in the Jedi Training episode).
Head to that center circular room (the dark one with the two Force surges floating in the air). This level has mag sealed walls. Fire a shots with your Bryar pistol or Repeater at the wall (Bryar should be easier to tell) when you are close. Get the angle so the shot bounces off the wall and hits you WHILE you have protection on. You'll note the shots will not only bounce off the walls but bounce off your OWN BODY (again, just like a super shield).
Bryar, ST Rifle, Repeater, Crossbow, and environmental blasters (like the blaster trap on Nar Shaddaa Loading Terminal) bounce off doing no damage and have ALWAYS bounced off.
Here are the things that can hurt a Protection user:
(These blast right through and do direct damage):
Fists
Throw
Debris from an explosion (like a rail charge or mine exploding in a nearby wall)
Falling damage
Being slammed into a wall (from Destruction)
Crushing damage (elevator frag)
(These wear down the shield)
Saber (very quickly)
Rail charges (especially secondary fire)
Concussion Rifle
Thermal Detonators
Sequencer Charges (Mines)
Force Lightning (ditto for the CO lightning trap)
Destruction (it also blasts them around)
Traps are still very deadly. The TD traps on Nar will either kill you or leave you badly wounded. The Force Field trap on Bespin will still kill you. You are not protected from drowning on CO or CTF.
Exploding Fire Barrels will kill you or else leave you almost dead if you somehow luck out.
Stacked sequencer mines are DEADLY (this is another great way to kill Super Shield users btw). Nobody can survive stepping on a stack of 20, for example (even 10 should be sufficient for a Protect user)!
Protection users are Immune to:
Force Grip (it cancels the grip if they turn it on too)
Blaster shots (ST Rifle, Repeater, Bryar, Crossbow, environmental blasters)
They CAN use Absorb with Protection (but this uses almost all their mana) meaning they can prevent their weapons being pulled during it, and they will gain mana back from getting lightning zapped (I'm not sure if the Protection bubble is still damaged by it in this case though)
In MotS, its the above plus:
Carbonite Gun (freezes you unhindered, and the "rifle butt" does direct damage just like fists)
You can also still be frozen if a carbonite ammo pickup is exploded near you (by shooting it... Force Defense lessens the time you are frozen, and makes you harder to freeze)
Seeking rails (just like normal rails wears it down and debris do direct damage)
Sniper Shots (no damage, but it does "push" you slightly, which can be used to knock you off ledges/into traps, iirc Scout's silenced sniper pushes you even more)
Flash grenades (WILL blind you if you don't have seeing on, and weakens Protect sligntly)
Remote detonation Sequencer Charges (same as regular Mines), weakens it and debris from explosions do direct damage
Immune to BlasTech pistol shots.
Immune to E-WEB cannon blasts (iirc) though this weapon is only found on some addon maps.
Chain Lightning severally weakens it, and I can't remember if Saber Throw simply weakens it (like a regular saber attack) or does direct damage (I'm guessing the former). Protection Users can be Pushed unhindered (unless they have Absorb or Defense to lessen the push).

pure genius.
Do wha????????
TWC, WaR, LOTD, Atomic, Margarita.....these were the clans I was in....and *muffle* IRN *muffle* *cough!*
I like to refer force protection.. as force condem
haha is deadly site ever worth a darn in multiplayer? i havent seen anyone use that in ages.
Hey, you never know what people miss or forget in the course of 8+ (9 at the end of 2006) years!
I just wanted to prevent any unfortunate rumors being started. π
I just realized a few weeks ago for example, that if you run over a pile of ammo, you get LESS than if you walk over it (grabbing each bit individually instead of all in one grasp... such as the bundles of ammo in the "laser trap area" on Nar Shaddaa Loading Terminal). Though I vaguely remember something from circa '98 or '99 mentioning this, I don't think I ever took it under consideration whilst playing.
I regularly run across people who weren't aware of the secret areas in some of the basic multiplayer levels too.
I still (perhaps naively) think that the key to fighting ignorance is education. π
There Can Be Only One
theres a spot in blades of death where you can regenerate health if yo uwalk up to the wall. and also you NEED absorb to sustain protection, otherwise enough shots (its a secret number that only I know) of destruction on the ground by you will "blast right through and do direct damage." the trick to killing protection is only firing destructions when they DON'T have absorb while picking up boosts (don't pull don't give them any opportunity to pick them up) and superpulling their surge (requires use-force to be binded) way up in the air. make damn sure to run over the healths too especially the one in the pool and bacta, and let them think they're going to get their surge and right as theyre about to take it pull that motherfucker and destruct them off the side of the cliff and make them self kill with fall damage! or waste precious mana on health.
well that's enough jk philosophy 101 for today everyone make sure to study there will be a pop quiz on monday.
I don't know about this "secret regenerating wall" in Blades of Death that you speak of, or these magical number of destructions, but the rest of the method seems unnecessarily complicated.
Killing a protection user is no more complicated than dealing 300 points of regular damage in 53 secs or less (by some means other than blasters of course).
Force Throw is a surprisingly easy to way to kill a Protection user, as are stacked mines. Destructing them off a cliff is a fine idea, but of course it won't gain you any points in JK, while straight up killing them will.
If your combat skills are up to snuff, killing them isn't a problem, unless they happen to be really really good (but as they have chosen protection, their mobility is severally limited and they're vulnerable to blind).
Combining Protection with absorb is really only useful for hanging onto your weapon, since it further drains you mana (unless you have a light surge), which you need not only to re-activate protect once it wears down, but also to heal yourself if they break through your shield bubble.
Protection is nerfed anyway in MotS. You'd be surprised though how useful Deadly Sight can be (in both games). Obviously you can't rely on it as your sole weapon, but in combination with other techniques, it's awesome, especially because so many people have written it off as "useless" and thus haven't bothered to learn how to counter it effectively.
But works best for you. π

oh ya you are a faggot Kurgan
No, I'm not a bundle of sticks.
If you beg me enough, I might unban you though.
There Can Be Only One
why the fuck do i care if you have me banned or not? i was there to fuck w/ the fake DSbr and nothing else, you totally insipid piece of shit.
Well, since you posted here to whine about me, I think you do care. π
It is funny though that you were making fun of people who posted five months ago in a dead thread...
you totally insipid piece of shit.
I know you are, but what am I?
There Can Be Only One
no kurgan you're wrong. you need absorb or else you'll eventually die from destructions and saber hits, as opposed to having them give you mana. besides you don't need mana with protection anyway. i hope to god you don't bother with blind or persuasion, but that should just be a given if you're posting around here. the trick is you use absorb first and then protection because you don't need virtually any mana to use pro.
i really wish i could play i could show you.
jeez u guys still havent figured it out yet, its been almost 10 years
I am the king

Well, saber hits will never give you mana, even if you have absorb on, but I think that was probably just a typo. π I agree that Protect uses very little mana for its benefit (which was why it was nerfed in MotS).
I guess you're saying that since a Level 8 Light sider has no neutral powers in this case, he might as well use all his mana on the powers he DOES have, right? I wouldn't really argue with that.
I'm not saying it's useless, only that it's not really necessarily in a lot of cases. Of course it could be that when I use protection I just don't go up against "elite" people. It seems that far more people these days are content to either play around with hacks, or whine about their best on online forums. No offense of course. π
I believe you, that Absorb is useful with protect. Obviously, Persuasion is not very useful with Protect, but you could still argue it has value, since it would prevent you from being targetted (Throw, Blind, Pull, Grip; Chain lightning and Push in MotS). Of course with Seeing, they can still target you of course (and the trade off that they only need level 1 seeing to nullify your level 3 Persuasion shows that inequality).
If you can blind them before they put on seeing then yes, it will help you. That means they won't be able to target you, which again, makes you immune to those force powers I cited above. Of course Grip should really be left out since it's completely useless against Protection. Throw however is extremely deadly. The thing is few people use it, and it won't get you points.
I will admit there is a difference between absolute advantage and how people typically play. I don't need to use a counter measure against a tactic that few people ever use, for example. If nobody ever tries to blind me and never tries to use persuasion, I don't need to keep seeing on constantly for that reason. If nobody ever tries to pull my weapon or grip me, I have less reason to use absorb. (and yes even then there are still good uses for all of those powers, but you get my point I hope)
I think it may be that a lot of players are simply unfamiliar with how to deal with protection and so may be unaware of how to counter it. If this encourages people like me to be "lazy" by not foolproofing my tactics while using it while fighting them, oh well. If people start beating me with those tactics, I'll step up my counter measures.
I think this theory may actually have merit though. I seem to remember back in the day some servers actually forbidding the use of Protect, and many deliberately lowering the force level to 7 (or less) to prevent it being used. People thought it was a "lame" power (because they hadn't learned to counter it, so to them it was akin to invulnerability) or even a cheat (as the guy who accused me), and so they forbid it. A consequence of their not having to deal with it, meant they never gained the experience of either learning how to use it effectively or how to counter it effectively.
Anyway, I'm thankful for your information and wish we could play a game to discuss it. I'm available on the weekends (PM me or email), except 12:30pm-5:30pm Central time when I work (Sat/Sun). The past few weekends I've been hosting a MotS server most of the time on those days, but I also have JK and we can fire it up if you want to show me anything.
Sorry to be long winded, but I hope that clears things up a bit?
