The Dreaded Tower
Author: [Luke Skywalker] Reviewer: [jturcio]
- Aesthetics:
- This levels aesthetics were rather poor. Being the authors first level it isn't very surprising. This level consisted mostly of boxes with 3dos in them. The author did very little by way of architectural details. For the most part these boxes were very small and didn't leave much elbow room. Another thing which hurts this level is the lighting. In some places it made sense but in others, it didn't make any. The texturing in this level was ok, but the
author either neglected to stitch surfaces or didn't know how to do so, as there are way too many, easily fixed, texture misalignments. Most of the cogs in this level revolved around the goals which were to be completed. Also the author did not fix an easily
corrected mistake with most of the doors, and that was that if you activated some of them a Cog_0001 (or something similar) message appeared. This could easily have been fixed by editing the cogstrings.uni file for the level. One of the few redeeming parts of this level, is an interesting maze-like puzzle, which you encounter 3/4 of the way into the level. It's filled with stormtroopers, powerups, and a few elevators which you need to make your way towards. However due to the texturing in this area it is very difficult to figure out where you are, and where you have been.
- Gameplay:
- This levels gameplay is a below average. You start of being fired upon by a group of 3 AT-STs which you can't do anything about. You also only have your fists to battle with until you encounter a solitary stormtrooper blocking the entrance to the tower. What
doesnt' make any sense to me is why would Katarn, jump into battle without a weapon. Many of the areas of this level were too cramped to do anything. A perfect example of this is a room with a few tables, two exits, and a door that leads to a room with your
lightsaber. The whole room was way out of proportion and it was difficult to move around in. The item placement in this level was ok. The flow was greatly effected by the narrow corridors and difficult to
follow passages that were blandly textured. The enemy placement in this level was ok, but in such tight spaces it really doesnt help this levels score. This level also had no real story. The story is the most important part of a level. This level had one but it was a bit weak. Find the disk, and get it to Jan. Watch out for Jerec at the top as well, you can kill
him but it is not required. How many times must Kyle encounter Jerec for him to die? Yet another example of a level which uses "old" characters to no avail. Also the data disk 3do could have been changed to be something new, but its the same one that is found in
level 2 of JK. In the future the author should consider developing a better story, and with that story
some new characters to play as. Kyle has invaded enough bases, killed Jerec enough times, and conquered Jedi after dark Jedi, it's time for some originality in sp levels.
- Final Comments:
- It is/was the authors first level and it was a good attempt at a SP level, however I cannot recommend the download unless you are a diehard SP enthusiast, or have some time too kill.
