MERC Waterfall
Author: [Dorkus Malorkus] Reviewer: [Brian]
Aesthetics:
MERC Waterfall is pretty average visually. There are a couple of well done waterfalls, but the illusion is lost due to misaligned textures and the lack of any type of flowing water sound. If you get in the water, there is also no sound, nor is there any sector tint. The architecture had some good points, like the main outdoor area with the rock bridges, but a lot of the areas were pretty boxy. Texturing could have used a lot of work. Jed, the editor uses to create JK levels, comes with some great texture stitching tools to make aligning textures very easy, so I don't understand why level authors don't take advantage of them. Another thing I must mention is the fact that there are a bunch of "secret" areas which are simply passages that you can't see. To get into them, you have to walk through a solid wall, which is too unrealistic to me. Sure this is science fiction, but you don't see anyone walking through walls in the movies or expanded universe.
Gameplay:
Although this isn't really my idea of a great level, I can see where a lot of people would have some fun. There are a few traps, although it's pure luck whether you hit anyone with them (you can't see the area that's trapped from the switch). One thing that I liked was the turret that shoots concussion blasts - it would be even cooler if you could aim it, or if it shot towards a well trafficked area. I do like levels with wide open areas, and this delivers. The framerate was pretty good througout the level as well. One cool addition was the "MERC Meeting Room" which is supposed to be a designated "no fighting" area. However, it would have cut down the download time if the author had not included the sound file that plays in the background. There were some dead-ends, which I really hate to see in MP levels, as it's too easy to get trapped, especially if you don't know the level well enough.
Final Comments:
Overall, this level was a bit above average. There was some cool architecture, but I would have liked to have seen that throughout the level, rather than just in some areas. I really hate the fact that you can go through solid walls. If the author had spent some more time polishing it, I think it would have turned out a bit more fun. Texture alignment, more ambient sounds (water and waterfalls at least), and less dead-ends would have made this level a lot more fun.
